Update: A second firefighter has succumbed to their injuries.

Original Story

Wilmington – Just after 3 a.m. this morning one firefighter was killed and two others were critically injured. The firefighters received their injuries while they were battling a  house fire at 1927 Lakeview Road in Wilmington.

Responding firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames. As crews attempted to rescue the occupants of the home there was some sort of collapse.  Additional crews were able to rescue two of the firefighters but were unable to reach the fallen crew member.

Occupants of the home included four children and at least one adult. They were taken to St. Francis Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fallen firefighter was carried from the home by his fellow firefighters,  draped in an American flag. The two other firefighters were flown to Christiana Hospital for critical injuries. The extent of their injuries are unclear at this time.

Departments from around the county responded to the Lakeview Road scene. It is unclear at this time which agency the crew members belong to.

A man that lives in the home said that his children were running around the home yelling fire get out. He stated that he thinks that the fire started in the basement but was unsure how.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control.  The Fire Marshall and investigators are currently on scene.

This is a developing story.
