Paratransit Bus, People Rescued From High Flood Waters, Storm Knocks Out Power

New Castle County – Yesterday just after 3:30 pm a massive rain storm traveled through New Castle County leaving flood waters in its wake. As the storm moved through crews from fire companies around the county began getting calls for water rescues and traffic accidents.

Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder along with marine units from Christiana Fire and Minquas of Newport Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to Capitol Trail in the area of Red Mill Road for an occupied vehicle in high water.

Aetna’s Squad 9 was responding to another incident and arrived as the water rescue was being dispatched, according to a statement in Aetna’s Facebook page. Squad 9 found two occupied vehicles and a paratransit in high, fast-moving water which was completely blocking the roadway.

Rescue workers were able to remove the occupants of the vehicles and the paratransit bus was towed out without incident, according to the post. There were no injuries reported.

Crews from Christiana Fire Company were also dispatched to Airport Road and I-95 near the Sheraton Hotel for a report of a car in high water. Not much is known about that incident at this time. The image below shows the location about an hour after the incident took place.

As the storm passed police dispatch and DelDOT began receiving calls for reports of traffic light outages. Police officers were sent to several intersection throughout  the county to direct traffic.

Delmarva Power was reporting outages across the county in the aftermath of the storm. According to Delmarva’s website 78 customers remain without power at this time.
