Mayor Purzycki Praises Council President Shabazz’s Call For State Audit

Wilmington – Wilmington City Council President Hanifa Shabazz this afternoon requested that State Auditor Tom Wagner conduct an audit of City Council’s discretionary expenditures for the Fiscal Years 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 according to a statement released by Wilmington Mayor, Mike Pursycki’s Office

The FY 2017 audit will also cover the first six months of Council President Shabazz’s term as President which began in January. The Council President asked Wagner to begin his work as soon as possible so that concerns voiced by citizens about Council’s discretionary expenditures could be reviewed and resolved, according to the statement.

In response to Shabazz’s request Mayor Mike Purzycki issued the following statement late yesterday afternoon:

“City Council President Hanifa Shabazz has made the correct decision. Even though there were suggestions that I take action, I did not want to intrude on Council’s business unnecessarily or prematurely. As I fully expected, the Council President made a good decision in asking that these matters be reviewed as soon as possible. This has been a good lesson for all of us when it comes to managing tax dollars and what we need to do going forward in placing controls on grant expenditures. We should learn from all of this.”
