State Fire Marshal: Bear Man Arrested In Connection With New Castle Dollar Tree Fire

New Castle – The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal has arrested a Bear, Delaware man this afternoon in connection with the arson that occurred at the Dollar Tree store in New Castle, Delaware on March 23, 2018, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal, Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the blaze, reported shortly after 7:00 pm, occurred inside the Dollar Tree store located in the Beaverbrook Plaza Shopping Center. The two alarm fire caused approximately $800,000 in damage. State fire investigators determined that the fire was intentionally started inside the store. The pursuing of investigative leads by investigators resulted in this arrest, Chionchio said.

Timothy M. McDowell, 58, was apprehended at a home on Red Lion Road, Bear without incident. He was charged with felony Arson 1st degree and felony Reckless Endangering 1st (3 counts). He is currently awaiting arraignment, according to Chionchio.

Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives assisted with this investigation.

Earlier today The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Baltimore Field Division issued a statement, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the fire. Along with the statement they released a photograph of a person they wanted to talk to. It’s unclear if media’s coverage was a factor in McDowell’s arrest.
