Wilmington – Crews working on Washington Street, in front of the Wilmington Hospital, have reportedly struck a large water main, sending water shooting at least 30 feet into the air.

John Rago, Spokesman for Mayor Purzycki said “We have a water main break at 13th and Washington streets. Public works crews are on the scene to bring the water under control, then they will dig underground to repair the water line. It is estimated that this project will take two to three hours to complete.”

Rago said the hospital is not affected as it draws its water from water lines in the next street over,  Jefferson Street.

The city doesn’t have have a firm number of businesses or residents affected just yet. Rago is urging traffic to avoid the area for the time being.

“It was not a city crew that hit the line, but some one hit the line which we’ll have to determine.”, said Rago

Washington Street near the hospital is currently closed as crews work to get the water turned off.
