File

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle that occurred early this morning on (U.S. 202) Concord Pike in the area of Rocky Run Parkway, Wilmington, Delaware, according to Director of Public Information, Sergeant Richard Bratz.

Bratz said the preliminary investigation has determined that on Monday, July 16, 2018, at approximately 3:24 a.m., a Mazda MZ3 was traveling northbound on US 202, Concord Pike approaching Rocky Run Parkway in the area Widener Law School. The Mazda was traveling in the right lane and for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off of the right side of the roadway and the front of the vehicle collided with a wooden fence that was on the right side of the roadway, according to Bratz. The vehicle continued to travel in a northeast direction and the front of the vehicle collided with a tree off the right side of the roadway. After impact, the vehicle bounced back into the right lane of northbound Concord Pike and ignited on fire. Two passers-by attempted to remove the operator from the vehicle but were unsuccessful due to the extreme heat and the vehicle being engulfed in fire.

The operator, 19-year-old man of Pennsylvania was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this crash.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours during the scene investigation and the removal of the vehicles.
