Man Succumbs To Injuries Days After Route 4 Crash, Newark Woman Facing Charges

The Delaware State Police is investigating the multi-vehicle crash that occurred at Ogletown-Stanton Road, at the intersection with Churchman’s Road on October 5, 2018, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Just before  11:30 a.m., on that rainy Friday a 1995 Ford Escort and a  2012 Toyota Tundra were both stopped at the traffic light in the eastbound lanes of Ogletown-Stanton Road. The Escort was in a line of traffic that was waiting to proceed eastbound. The Tundra was in the turn lane waiting to turn onto Delaware Park Blvd. Also at the intersection, a 2000 Honda Accord was stopped in front of the Escort at the red light and a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder was turning left on to westbound Ogletown-Stanton Road from Churchman’s Road.

A fifth vehicle,  a 2009 Honda Civic, traveling eastbound on Ogletown-Stanton Road, approached the intersection and began to travel in between the left turn and left thru lane of eastbound Ogletown-Stanton Road, at which time it struck the left rear of the Escort, the right rear of the Tundra and then the left rear of the Accord in succession, according to Austin.  After the Civic struck the Accord Civic it continued into the intersection against the red light and struck the left side of the Pathfinder which was proceeding with its left turn.

All operators with the exception of the driver of the Tundra, who was not injured, were transported to the Christiana Hospital with various, non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Pathfinder, Virgilio Sui, 79, of Wilmington, originally transported with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries, died on October 10, 2018, due to complications from injuries sustained in the crash, according to Austin.

The operator of the Civic, 63-year-old Jane Emery of Newark was charged at the time of the incident with Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain a Lane of Travel, Failure to Stop at a Red Light, Failure to Signal, Unreasonable Speed, and No Proof of Insurance.

As a result of the Virgilio Sui’s death, the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit has assumed the investigation.
