Upcoming Reindeer 5K Run & Romp To Benefit Special Olympics Delaware

The 13th annual 5K Run and Romp (walk) to benefit Special Olympics Delaware is Friday, Nov. 30. More than 1,300 participants are expected to take part in the chip-timed race beginning at 7:00 p.m., with walkers (rompers) beginning shortly afterward.

A unique feature of the event, which is held on the same night as the City of Newark’s Winterfest, is that it takes place along a luminary-lit course lined with festive entertainment and fun activities along the way. New this year – a holiday costume contest open to all race or walk participants.

The course starts and ends on Academy Street near the Delaware Avenue intersection and proceeds south, winding along several streets to the James Hall trail before heading back up Academy Street to the finish line.

The entry fee for runners and walkers is $25 for pre-registered participants, $30 day-of, and includes a long-sleeve event T-shirt, discount coupons for Main Street merchants and post-event refreshments.

“Because of the uniqueness of this event it attracts people from all over the area,” said Lisa Smith, director of development for Special Olympics Delaware. “Whether you are a serious runner or just want to bring the family to downtown Newark for Winterfest, participating in the Reindeer Run and Romp is the perfect way to give back to the community during the holiday season.”

Last year’s event had nearly 1,500 participants raise $70,000 for Special Olympics Delaware. In the event’s 12-year history, more than $475,000 has been raised.
