Vets, Active Duty Military Ride Free On Cape May-Lewes Ferry November 11

On November 11, the Cape May -Lewes Ferry will offer free passenger round trip, same day travel for Veterans and Active Military personnel with a valid ID. Military discounts are available every day year-round at the Ferry and this is the second year that the Delaware Bay service is offering the special free fare in honor of Veterans Day. In addition, military personnel and veterans receive a free cup of coffee or a fountain soda plus 11% off any food or retail purchases in either terminal or aboard a ferry vessel.

According to Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations, the Cape May – Lewes Ferry family wanted to honor and thank our military community for their service to our country. “If not for our military service members, we would not have the freedoms we do today,” Gehrke said. “Veterans and their family members have sacrificed a lot for us and this is a small way we can say ‘thank you!’”

Ferry officials also decided to dedicate the entire month to Veteran’s Appreciation rather than just one day. “We realize that May is typically Veterans Appreciation Month, but we are expanding that notion to include November,” said Terry Anstead, Customer Service Manager. “All active or retired military personnel who use our service during the month of November – including on Veterans Day – will receive an emailed discount voucher before the end of the year. The voucher will be worth $11 off any future travel aboard the Ferry through May 31, 2019.” Anstead added that a valid military ID is required to receive the discount voucher.

Gehrke noted that many of the Ferry employees are veterans and reserve military from all branches of the military and the operation’s homeport of Cape May is also home to the USCG training center. “The Ferry is one of the main ways that veterans and active military travel to Washington, D.C. for ceremonies and events,” Gehrke said. “Veterans Day is an important holiday to us and we hope we can make the journey just a bit easier for those who have served.”

According to the Veterans Administration, more than 400,000 veterans live in New Jersey while 78,000 reside in Delaware – about 8% of that state’s population. In Cape May County, veterans make up nearly 9% of the population, one of the highest rates in the state.

On Sunday, November 11, 2018, all active military and veterans are eligible for free, round-trip foot passenger travel on the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. If traveling roundtrip with a vehicle, standard rates apply with a $14 discount. These discounted rates are valid only on November 11, 2018, and cannot be combined with other discounts or promotions. These discounted Veterans Day rates only apply on Veteran’s Day while the standard military discount applies year-round. Make your reservation today by calling 800-643-3779.
