Happening Now: Tractor-Trailer Fire Shuts Down Route 1 SB, Injuries Reported

Middletown – Firefighters have responded to Route 1 at Route 299 for a tractor-trailer fire. An off-duty firefighter reported that there was an explosion with fire.

Early indications are that the driver has been injured and is en route to Christiana Hospital.

Southbound lanes of Route 1 a completely shut down.

Update: The fire started in the wheel well of the truck according to reports from the scene. As the driver was trying to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher the tire exploded. The driver was struck by debris and is en route to the trauma center.

Update: Route 1 SB traffic is being diverted off the highway onto Route 896.
