Early Morning Crash In Newark Traps One, Three To Hospital

Just before 6:00 this morning Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, Christiana Fire, and New Castle County Paramedics were dispatched to I-95 Southbound in the area of the service plaza for a motor vehicle collision reported with a cardiac arrest.

Crews arrived to find a multi-vehicle accident with one subject trapped and a total of 4 patients. As fire crews worked to extricate the patient, New Castle County Paramedics performed triage and initiated patient care along with the ambulance crews.

The trapped patient was extricated in just under 15 minutes, according to Atena Deputy Chief Jeff Sands.

The trapped patient, a 25-year-old woman, suffered body wide injuries. She was transported to Christiana Hospital via Christiana Fire Company ambulance accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics in critical condition.

The second patient, a 25-year-old man, suffered injuries to his arms and legs. He was transported to Christiana Hospital via Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company ambulance accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics in serious condition.

The third patient, a 32-year-old man, suffered injuries to his shoulder. He was transported to Christiana Hospital via Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company ambulance accompanied by emergency medical technicians in stable condition.

The fourth patient, 53-year-old male, suffered injuries to his back and declined transport to the hospital. The initial reports of a cardiac arrest were unfounded, said Sands.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the accident.

DelDOT is currently on scene making repairs to the guardrail.
