Counselor, 4 Youth Hospitalized After Brawl At New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center

On Thursday of last week, rescue crews from three New Castle County fire companies, along with several units from the New Castle County Paramedics, responded to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center for reports that multiple people were injured.

Over the weekend word began to leaked out that the incident may have been a fight between rival Delaware youth gangs in Building 14 of the facility, that has not been confirmed.  Officials did say that staff intervened in what they described as an altercation and were able to bring the incident under control quickly.

Reportedly occurring just before 11:00 a.m., the altercation led to the injury of a female “Counselor” and 4 “Students”, according to a source familiar with the incident. The staffer, who reportedly suffered neck injuries, was transported to Christiana Hospital by emergency personnel.

The source tells First State Update that the four students suffered injuries ranging from head trauma, eye injury, cardiac problems, and concussion-like symptoms.  While we have confirmed through multiple sources that the students were all taken to the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, we have not confirmed the nature of their injuries.

The incident may have involved over 20 students including some female students, according to the source.

The facility is a 64-bed lock-secure facility serving pre-adjudicated males and females under the age of 18-years-old, according to their website.

This is a developing story.
