Milford – This morning, Sunday, May 12, 2019, a serious accident caused the closure of Route 1 (Bay Road) near Milford.

Just after 11:30 a volunteer firefighter alerted Kent County Dispatch (Kent Center) that he was on the scene of an accident with multiple injuries.

Kent Center immediately dispatched crews from the Carlisle, Fredrica, Harrington, and Houston Fire Companies, along with area medics.

Upon their arrival, crews reported that one patient was in very serious condition and was being rushed to the hospital by a Heart to Heart ambulance crew that was already on scene.

Upon his arrival, Command ordered the highway closed and declared a level one mass casualty incident which brought additional ambulance crews to the scene.

Early radio reports from the scene indicate that two drivers were involved in an accident. As one of the drivers, a female, exited her vehicle the second vehicle was struck by a third vehicle,  causing the second vehicle to strike the woman.

Two other adults and five children suffered only minor injuries and were transported to Bay Health Sussex

The southbound lanes of Route 1, just north of Milford, were closed while crews worked to clear the accident.
