Upon their arrival, firefighters reported smoke showing from the third floor.  Firefighters then encountered an active fire inside a third-floor apartment. Residents fled from the building and were uninjured. One occupant was checked at the scene and released without transport to a medical facility.

State fire investigators, called to the scene, said the fire originated in a kitchen on the third floor and was caused by cooking oil igniting on the stovetop. A total of nine units were affected by the fire with and damage estimated ar 10,000.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to those residents in need. Approximately 20 people have been displaced.
