Newark’s District 1 Councilman James Horning Announces Immediate Resignation

In a post on his Facebook page Newark’s District 1 Councilman, James Horning, announced his resignation today.

Regretfully, this morning I resigned from Newark City Council effective immediately due to unexpected personal challenges I need to deal with.
I will always reflect proudly on the teamwork and dedication of staff and employees that moved our City forward the past couple of years. I am forever grateful to my neighbors in District 1 and throughout our wonderful City that entrusted and supported me with the great honors and privileges of Councilman and Deputy Mayor. I thank all of you that engaged with critical feedback to get us to a better place. Indeed, in Newark there is and always should be a place for everyone where everyone has a voice. I am committed to helping my successor serve our neighbors well.

Mayor Jerry Clifton and the remaining members of council will hold a special council meeting on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. and set the date for a special election during which his replacement will be selected.

After June 1, District 1 residents interested in filling the vacant seat may contact the City Secretary’s Office via email at [email protected] or phone at 302-366-7000 to make arrangements to pick up a nominating petition. To learn the qualifications to file for candidacy, click here.
