Pedestrian Struck And Killed Early Monday In Middletown

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred this morning on southbound Route 13 south of Hyett’s Corner Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on September 27, 2021, at approximately 12:18 a.m., a 2011 Nissan Versa was traveling southbound on Route 13 approaching the intersection with Hyett’s Corner Road. The 20-year-old female operator of the Versa merged from the left lane into the right lane of travel. At this time, a pedestrian was walking northbound on Route 13 within the southbound right lane of travel. The front of the Versa struck the pedestrian causing the pedestrian to be thrown to the right shoulder. The Versa came to a controlled stop within the right southbound lane of travel.

The 36-year-old pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.

The area in which this collision occurred is not illuminated and the pedestrian was not wearing any type of reflective clothing and was not carrying a flashlight, according to Hatchell. The pedestrian was also not within a marked pedestrian crosswalk.

Route 13 southbound at Hyett’s Corner Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
