Police: Newark Charter Bus Driver Fell Asleep Just Before Accident

Newark Police are investigating a school bus crash that occurred on Monday morning.

Police said on October 5, 2021, at about 8:55, Newark Charter School bus # 16, operated by a 36-year-old man, was pulling into the Newark Charter School’s Patriot Way campus. The driver fell asleep as he pulled into the campus and struck three parked cars, left the roadway, and struck a pole, according to police. The bus was occupied by 37 elementary and middle school students at the time of the crash. Impairment and speed were not factors in the crash, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin.

Upon police arrival, a school nurse was treating some students who received minor injuries. The driver was not injured. A total of eighteen students were treated by the nurse for their minor injuries. No student required transportation to a medical facility and the school notified parents of the incident.

Charges against the driver of the bus are pending said Rubin.
