Troopers Update Fatal Crash That Closed Route 1 Saturday

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Saturday morning in Milford.

On October 2, 2021, at approximately 11:32 a.m., a 2015 Chrysler 200 operated by a 53-year-old Milford man was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway, approaching the SR 1 Business off-ramp within the Milford town limits. For unknown reasons, the operator failed to maintain control, and the vehicle swerved to the right and exited the east edge of the roadway. After leaving the road, it overran a barbed wire fence before the front center impacted a tree. After impact, the vehicle came to rest beside the tree and became fully engulfed in flames.

The 53-year-old operator suffered fatal injuries during the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

Route 1 NB was closed while crews worked to place the scene under control. One lane reopened, however, the right lane was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was processed and cleared.
