Rider Succumbs To Injuries Suffered In July Motorcycle Crash

The Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic accident that occurred last month in the Newark area.

The incident, which took place on July 2, 2023, seriously injured 35-year-old Andrew Wambugu of Newark. On Wednesday Wambugu succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash.

Officials said on the day of the accident, at approximately 12:39 p.m., a 2022 Triumph Trident motorcycle was cruising along the right lane of Route 1 northbound, specifically in the vicinity of the off-ramp to I-95 southbound. Simultaneously, a 2018 Nissan Maxima was navigating the left lane of Route 1 northbound.

Troopers said the Nissan Maxima abruptly executed a series of lane changes, entering the right lane where the Triumph was traveling. The motorcycle collided with the rear passenger side of the Nissan. The impact ejected Wambugu from his motorcycle.

Wambugu was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted with critical injuries. On August 9, 2023, he passed away officials said Friday.

The operator of the Nissan, a 21-year-old Pittsburgh man was not injured in the crash.

The man was cited for an improper lane change on the date of the incident, However, additional charges may be pending as the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident officals said.
