Inmate Found Dead In Cell Monday Morning

The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) today announced the death of Jesse Goodchild, a 44-year-old inmate from Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (HRYCI) officials said Monday. 

Goodchild, of Wilmington, was brought into DOC custody on Thursday, September 28, 2023, on a Violation of Probation for a Robbery 1st Degree conviction according to prison officials. 

 On Monday, October 2, 2023, at approximately 8:55 a.m. Goodchild, who was alone in his intake unit cell, was discovered unresponsive by a Correctional Officer and facility nurse who were conducting routine medical checks. 

A medical alert was initiated and lifesaving measures were immediately initiated.  Additional medical staff responded, joined by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics who continued lifesaving measures.  Goodchild was pronounced dead at HRYCI by EMS paramedics at 9:41 a.m. on October 2.

Delaware State Police was contacted and responded to HRYCI to conduct an independent death investigation.  Goodchild’s body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Science to determine the cause of death.
