State Lawmakers To Try And Reninstate Death Penalty

Delaware lawmakers are set to introduce legislation that would reinstate the death penalty in Delaware.

Representatives Danny Short of Seaford and Tim Dukes of Laurel, have announced plans to introduce legislation in January that seeks to reinstate the death penalty for individuals convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer, public safety officer, correctional officer, or a first responder.

The legislation, proposed by the two Sussex County representatives comes days after Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook’s killer was convicted in his brutal murder.

In 2016 the state’s Supreme Court found the death penalty statute was unconstitutional. Short and Dukes aim to address the constitutional issues highlighted by the state’s highest court in their efforts to reintroduce the death penalty in specific cases.
