A Salisbury woman has been arrested after investigators say she intentionally set fire to the front door of a man’s home following a dispute over an alleged $7.
On July 3, investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Salisbury Fire Department responded to 314 Penn Street for a reported fire that the occupant had extinguished. The man told investigators that Janice Louise Oney, someone he had known for several years, became upset after demanding $7 she claimed he owed her. After a brief argument, Oney allegedly left and returned minutes later with a bottle of gasoline, setting the front door on fire before fleeing the area on a bicycle.
With assistance from K9 “Deacon,” investigators confirmed the fire was intentionally set police said. Several pieces of evidence were collected, including surveillance footage from nearby businesses that helped link Oney to the incident police said.
On August 1, an arrest warrant was issued charging Oney with first- and second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property over $1,000, reckless endangerment, and theft under $100. Later that evening, she was taken into custody with the help of the Salisbury Police Department and the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack.
Oney was transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center and was originally held without bond following an appearance before a District Court Commissioner. She was later released on unsecured bond.
