Crash Involving Train Sends One To Hospital

At approximately 7:43 p.m. Tuesday evening, rescue crews were dispatched to the Septa station area near Delaware Park in Newark following reports of a vehicle being struck.

Initial information from the scene indicates that a woman drove her vehicle down an embankment and onto the train tracks near the station off Fairplay Boulevard. After the vehicle came to rest on the tracks, the woman was able to self-extricate and was leaning on the rear of the vehicle.

While the woman was outside of the car, an Amtrak train traveling at an estimated speed of about 30 miles per hour struck the vehicle. The impact caused the vehicle to shift and knocked the woman to the ground according to the reports.

Emergency medical personnel from New Castle County, Mill Creek, and Newport responded to the scene. The woman was transported to Christiana Hospital for evaluation. Her injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening at the time of transport.

During the incident Septa reported that service was temporarily suspended between Wilmington Station and Newark Station due to an auto on the tracks.
