The Christina School District announced that classes will be held virtually on Monday, January 5, 2026, due to anticipated traffic and access concerns related to the funeral for fallen Trooper Matthew T. “Ty” Snook. District officials cited expected road closures and congestion in and around Newark as the reason for the decision. Newark Charter School will operate in person as scheduled on Monday.
Officials are advising the public to expect significant traffic delays throughout Newark for most of the day. Trooper Snook’s funeral will take place at the Bob Carpenter Center, located on the University of Delaware campus at 631 South College Avenue. Authorities estimate approximately 3,000 people are expected to attend the service, contributing to increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic before, during, and after the funeral.
Traffic impacts are expected between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with South College Avenue anticipated to be the most heavily impacted roadway. Traffic may be stopped for extended periods at times as funeral-related movements take place. Motorists traveling through the area are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes whenever possible.
Those attending the funeral are urged to allow ample travel time, follow all posted signage and directions, and use designated crosswalks with assistance from officers who will be deployed throughout the area to manage traffic and pedestrian safety.
Additional information and updates are expected as planning continues and will be shared when available.
