Detectives with the New Castle County Police arrested a Wilmington man Tuesday afternoon following a traffic stop. Officials said the stop led to the discovery of a loaded handgun and a large quantity of marijuana.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on January 6, 2026, while detectives assigned to the Active Crime Trends Team were conducting proactive patrols in the area of Lancaster Avenue. Detectives conducted a traffic stop on a teal Nissan Versa near the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and Cleveland Avenue for a traffic violation.

Police said detectives developed probable cause to search the vehicle, during which they recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and more than 200 grams of marijuana. Authorities reported that the firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were concealed inside the vehicle.

Further investigation determined that the driver, identified as 23-year-old Taiswan Gibbs of Wilmington, is prohibited from possessing a firearm, police said.

Gibbs was taken into custody and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor offenses, including possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, possession with intent to deliver, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a Tier 1 controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued citations for driving while using a communication device and for a windshield material violation.

Authorities said Gibbs was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $47,770 secured bail.
