Man Wanted Across Multiple Jurisdictions Arrested After String Of Crimes

Wilmington Police have arrested a 50-year-old man in connection with a series of commercial burglaries on the city’s West Side.

Police said investigators were in the area of 4th and Jackson Streets at approximately 3:00 a.m. on April 29 as part of an ongoing investigation into burglaries affecting businesses west of I-95. Officers were then made aware of an attempted burglary that had just occurred in the 1000 block of West 4th Street.

The investigation led detectives to a vacant residence in the 1000 block of Read Street, where they located 50-year-old Jimmie Hayes. Police said Hayes, who police say was wanted on multiple unrelated matters in several jurisdictions, was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators said they recovered proceeds connected to multiple burglary incidents. Detectives later identified Hayes as a suspect in connection with nine burglary incidents and two attempted burglaries at locations including West 4th Street, Lancaster Avenue, North Lincoln Street, West 3rd Street, North DuPont Street, North Market Street and North Union Street.

Hayes has been charged with eight counts of third-degree burglary, five counts of theft under $1,500, two counts of criminal mischief under $1,000, seven counts of criminal mischief over $1,000 and two counts of theft over $1,500.

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and received $42,000 secured bail on the burglary-related charges, along with $10,000 cash-only bail for a violation of probation. He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution pending further proceedings.
