A fatal crash that occurred near Georgetown last week remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police.

Authorities said the incident took place on April 17, 2026, at approximately 12:00 p.m., when a Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on Dupont Boulevard, just north of McColley’s Chapel Road. The preliminary investigation determined the vehicle gradually exited the west edge of the roadway, striking a mailbox, a road sign, and a large embankment before coming to a stop.

Following the collision, the vehicle caught fire. Bystanders removed the unresponsive driver from the vehicle and began life-saving efforts at the scene until emergency responders arrived.

The driver, identified as 81-year-old Michael Jeffra of Georgetown, was initially believed to have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died. Investigators have since determined that his death was the result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Dupont Boulevard was closed for approximately two hours as troopers conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Delaware State Police Troop 5.
