Convenience Store Closed After Thursday Morning Fire

Wilmington – At 05:17 am on Thursday October 5, 2017, Wilmington Firefighters on the C platoon were dispatched to a building fire in the area of W.7th Street & N. Monroe Street, according to Public Information Officer Battalion Chief John Looney.

Looney said upon arrival of Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Michael Schaal reported fire showing from the rear of building. The building is a two-story corner building with a convenience store on the first level and an occupied apartment on the second level. All occupants of the building had evacuated prior to Fire Department’s arrival. The crews immediately made entry into the rear of the building and began an aggressive interior fire suppression effort with simultaneous search efforts on all levels.

The scene was placed under control at 05:37 am by the Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Michael Schaal. The commercial portion of the building has been closed by License & Inspections for various code violations. The Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office responded to and is investigating the cause of the fire.
Approximately 20 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire.

The following units responded: Engine 1, Engine 6, Squad 4, Ladder 2, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, FM-14, FM-18, St. Francis EMS, New Castle County Medics, and Wilmington Licenses & Inspections.
