If you’ve driven down Water Street in Newport over the last month or so you’ve probably noticed a lot of work going on under the bridge. DelDOT contractors are currently working to repair the foundation of the Route 141 bridge that spans the Christina River.
The pile caps of Piers 2 and 3 which are located in the Christina River have been under-mined by scour (the removal of sediment such as sand and gravel from around bridge abutments or piers.) leaving portions of the steel H-piles exposed. Some portions of the steel H-piles also exhibit corrosion. Several expansion bearings are not functioning due to age and condition. Some portions of the steel tub girders are showing signs of fatigue and are in need of strengthening.
This project involves the rehabilitation of BR 1-501 substructure. At Piers 2 and 3 which are located in the Christiana River, the work includes installing concrete pile jackets over the steel H-piles and installing rip rap scour protection. In addition, the entire line of expansion bearing on Piers 6, 14, and 15 will be replaced. Steel retro-fit of tub girders will be installed over pier and abutment supports.
Work began this Spring and is expected to wrap up in the Fall of 2020.
