A Newark woman was arrested Wednesday evening after Delaware State Police said a stolen vehicle investigation at the Christiana Mall led troopers to a residence in Newark, where the suspect allegedly assaulted an officer during an arrest attempt.
According to police, the investigation began at about 6:15 p.m. on April 8, 2026, when troopers responded to the Christiana Mall for a report of a stolen Toyota Camry. Authorities said the vehicle was later tracked to the unit block of Jamison Street in Newark, where troopers located it.
Police said troopers at the scene saw a woman, identified as 36-year-old Rebecca Weatherly of Newark, enter the vehicle and remove personal property from inside. As troopers approached and attempted to take her into custody, Weatherly allegedly resisted and struck a trooper, causing injuries that were described as not life-threatening.
Weatherly was taken into custody without further incident, according to police. Troopers said a search of Weatherly led to the recovery of the keys to the stolen Toyota.
She was taken to Troop 6 and charged with second-degree assault involving injury to a law enforcement officer, receiving stolen property valued over $1,500, and resisting arrest with force or violence. After arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 2, Weatherly was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $3,500 cash bail.
