An investigation is underway after a driver allegedly entered the active crash scene and nearly struck emergency personnel on Saturday.
In a story that First State Update first told you about Saturday morning. Fire police along with police and other first responders were on the scene were two pedestrians were struck in Dewey Beach.
Police said that while the roadway remained closed near Saulsbury Street, a Ford Focus traveling southbound failed to obey a Fire Police Officer directing traffic. The vehicle entered the restricted area and nearly struck the officer, causing several first responders to move out of its path.
Officers stopped the vehicle and removed the driver, who had attempted to lock himself inside. The operator was identified as 26-year-old Christian McPoyle of Dover.
Investigators reported observing signs of impairment. McPoyle was taken into custody and transported to the Dewey Beach Police Department, where a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample.
He was charged with multiple misdemeanor offenses, including driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless endangering in the second degree, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and driving while suspended or revoked. He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on an intoxication hold.
The Delaware Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement assisted with the investigation. Authorities said additional charges remain pending as the investigation continues.
