Newark – State police said that on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at approximately 9:37 p.m., as Edward D. Shank, 28, of Newark, was attempting to cross from south to north on westbound Kirkwood Highway at the intersection of Delaware Park Boulevard, Newark. As Shank entered the roadway, he stepped into the path of a 2014 Dodge Charger, which was traveling in the right hand lane of Kirkwood Highway on a green traffic signal, and which was being operated by Matthew S. Myers, 27, of Wilmington, according to police. The right front of the Charger struck Shank, who was then vaulted up over the roof of the car. Shank then landed in the right hand lane of the roadway where he came to rest. Myers was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop approximately 500 ft. west of the intersection, police said
Edward Shank was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics. He was then transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs on the part of Shank was a factor in this crash. Shank was utilizing a marked crosswalk, however, the crosswalk signal was activated warning not to cross.
Matthew Myers was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured. Myers, however, was charged by troopers with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (3rd Offense), Driving While Suspended or Revoked, No Proof of Motor Vehicle Insurance, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution for lack of $7000.00 cash bail.
Police said that there are no further charges are expected at this time.
