Smyrna Police on patrol recently apprehended a man wanted by the Middletown Police Department as well as Kent County CCP with an illegally concealed handgun after a traffic stop, according to police.
Just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday a Smyrna police officer stopped a motor vehicle for traffic violations on S Carter Road. Officers contacted the driver, Marquis Lewis, 23 of Townsend.
Officers detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle while speaking with the occupants. Mr. Lewis and his adult passenger were detained while a vehicle search was conducted.
Police said that this search revealed an illegally concealed 9mm handgun which was loaded, located in a bag behind the passenger seat. Officers also located a small amount of marijuana which belonged to the passenger, police said Mr. Lewis was taken into custody and transported back to the police department where he was charged with the following crimes carrying a concealed deadly weapon, driving while suspended and possession of a suspended license.
Officers said that in addition to these charges, Mr. Lewis was wanted by the Middletown PD for Driving while Suspended, Criminal Mischief under $1500 and Disorderly Conduct. He was also wanted on a capias from Kent County CCP, police said.
Lewis was arraigned for all of these charges via video court in JP #2. He was issued $3,250 total unsecured bond for his SPD charges, MPD charges and capias. He was released pending a future court hearing. Mr. Lewis’s passenger was issued a citation for civil possession of marijuana.
