Milford – Delaware State Police said that just after 1:00 a.m. on Saturday September 10, 2016 a 53-year-old Milford man was driving a 2010 Mercedes C30 southbound in the northbound lane of Coastal Highway, SR 1, north of Brick Granary Road.
At the same time, a 28-year-old Dover man was operating a 1999 Volkswagen Passat northbound on SR 1 approaching the Mercedes. As a result, the left front of the Mercedes struck the left front of the Volkswagen in the northbound left lane., police said. After the impact, the Mercedes rotated counter-clockwise and exited the west side of the road where it came to a stop in the grass median.
The Volkswagen rolled onto its roof as it slid off the east side of the road where it came to a stop upside down along a wooded area.
The 28-year-old male, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead on scene as a result of his injuries. He was properly restrained, police said.
The 53-year-old male, who was properly restrained, was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. His name is also being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Police said that moments prior to the crash, witnesses observed the Mercedes driving recklessly and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Johnson Road and SR 1. Authorities said that the car continued across the highway and into a field where the car began spinning. Once out of the field, the car was observed traveling southbound in the northbound lanes until the crash occurred, police said.
