Wilmington – On Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at approximately 9:00 a.m., Wilmington Police Officers assigned to “B” Platoon responded to the area of the 2300 block of Kentmere Parkway after an alert area resident notified 911 dispatchers of a suspicious male walking in the area, according to authorities.
Officials said that a detailed description was provided to the responding officers and within minutes a patrol supervisor observed a male, later identified as Shakur Parks, 19 of Wilmington, who matched the description of the suspicious person in the 2200 block of Shallcross Avenue.
A pedestrian stop was conducted of Parks and after verifying his identity, it was discovered that Parks had several active warrants for his arrest, according to police. Parks was placed into custody without incident.
Police found a loaded Smith & Wesson .22 caliber handgun in Parks’ waistband, prior to placing him into a patrol vehicle, according to officials. Authorities said that the weapon was later found to have been reported stolen form a neighboring police jurisdiction.
Continued investigation by Wilmington Police Officers led to the recovery of a backpack that the defendant had discarded in a recycle bin located in the 2300 block of Delaware Avenue. No additional items of evidence were located in the bag, said police.
Parks was transported to police headquarters where he was booked on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited- Previous Violent Felony Conviction, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Possession of a Firearm in a School Zone.
Arraignment and bail information is not available at this time.
