Storm Forces Hundreds Of Police To Seek Shelter At Funeral

Wilmington –  Police officers and first responders from around the region showed up to remember Corporal Stephen Ballard on Friday morning. As Ballard’s funeral got underway the weather outside the Chase Center started to concern officials on scene.

After the family arrived and Corporal Ballard was escorted inside, the men and woman of law enforcement were sent to tents setup in the parking lot. The tents were setup to keep them dry and to provide refreshments.

At around 10:30 a.m. reports of strong winds and heavy rain forced commanders to rethink the tents. At around 10:35 a.m. the order to seek shelter was given.

The Chase Center and Frawley Stadium were both opened up to the police officers, first responders and volunteers so they could ride out the storm.

Just after 11:00 a.m. the severe threat had passed and the order was given to return to the tents.
