Original Story

Millsoboro – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a serious crash involving a bicyclist this afternoon west of Millsboro, according to Director of Public Information Sergeant Richard D. Bratz.

Bratz said the incident occurred around 2:58 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 as a 1999 Freightliner tractor, pulling a 2009 Wade trailer, operated by Chester Littleton, 65 of Frankford, was traveling westbound on Laurel Road (SR 24), approaching the intersection at Carey’s Camp Road (CR 421).

At the same time Kenneth Tull, 72 of Delmar, Maryland was riding a road bicycle southbound on Carey’s Camp Road approaching the intersection at Laurel Road, according to Bratz. Laurel Road is a throughway and traffic on Carey’s Camp Road is controlled by a posted stop sign, said Bratz.

The bicyclist failed to stop and yield and attempted to cross Laurel Road and the operator of the tractor trailer activated the brakes and swerved left, however the front right struck the left side of the bicycle in the middle of the intersection and then skidded to a stop, according to Bratz. Tull was thrown in a westbound direction and came to rest in the roadway west of the intersection.

Kenneth Tull, who was wearing a bicycle helmet, was airlifted from the scene by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit and transported to the Christiana Medical Center where he is currently admitted in critical condition.

Chester Littleton, who was wearing his seat-belt was not injured in the collision, according to Bratz. Impairment is not a factor in this collision.

Both, Laurel Road and Carey’s Camp Road, were closed in the area of the crash for approximately 2 ½ hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. If anyone may have witnessed this crash, they are asked to contact Corporal N. Demalto of the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-703-3267.
