New Castle – At approximately 2:10 p.m. today, Friday June 30, 2017, Wilmington Manor Fire Company, along with County Police, State Police and New Castle County Paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of Old State Road and South DuPont Highway (Route 13), just south of the Route 13/40 split, for a report of a traffic collision.
Arriving crews found a pedestrian in the roadway that had been struck by a vehicle. The patient was being treated by an off-duty paramedic that came upon the accident. Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) was already in the area and was able to land at the scene within a matter of minutes. The patient was quickly loaded on to the helicopter and was flown to the hospital in “very serious condition”.
A woman believed to be the driver did not appear to have any physical injuries. The woman was transported to the hospital via Good Will Fire Company ambulance for observation.
Fire police and DelDOT crews diverted traffic away from the accident as police investigated the incident.
State Police released a statement shortly after the accident
State Police is currently at the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian was struck, according to Public Information Officer Master Corporal Jeffrey Hale.
Hale said the crash occurred at approximately 1:11 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, June 30, 2017, on southbound US Rt. 13 (S. Dupont Highway) just south of US Rt. 40 (Pulaski Highway) and involves a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. As a result of the crash the pedestrian that was struck has sustained very serious injuries.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of US Rt. 13 south of US Rt. 40 have been closed to traffic. Commuters are asked to find alternate routes of travel.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police. More information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
