Major Accident In Wilmington Kills One, Passenger Flown To Hospital

Wilmington – At 11:42 am on July 27, 2017, Wilmington Firefighters on the D-Platoon were dispatched to 599 Blk of S Market Street for a vehicle accident with entrapment. The first arriving Engine Company and District Battalion Chief advised of heavy entrapment. Members of Squad 4 upon their arrival initiated an extrication of the trapped patients. All patients were freed from the debris within 14 minutes.

 A small SUV and a box truck were involved in the accident with the driver and occupant of the small SUV being injured. The driver of the SUV succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by New Castle County paramedics. The passenger of the SUV was airlifted by Delaware State Police Trooper 4 to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

South Market St. will be closed for an extended amount of time at “A” Street for a fatal investigation and hazardous spill cleanup. During the accident the saddle tank on the box truck was ruptured spilling an unknown amount of diesel fuel into the street. DNREC is on scene mitigating the hazardous spill while Wilmington police continue the fatal investigation.
