Major Accident On I-95, Four People Trapped

Newark – Just before 3:40 this afternoon Delaware State Police, along with crews from Christiana, Minquas and Aetna, Hose Hook and Ladder Fire Companies responded to a serious accident on I-95 NB between Route 273 and Route 1.

Arriving crews found four patients trapped in their vehicle, unable to extricate themselves after slamming into the Jersey barrier in the middle of the highway. Additional ambulance crews were called to the scene as firefighters worked to cut the family out of the vehicle.  Firefighters removed the doors before cutting through the roof to gain access the patients.

Once the roof was removed from the car, EMTs from Christiana Fire Company began to treat the patients. The driver was placed on an awaiting stretcher and then transported by ambulance. A small child and a young woman were able to walk to the ambulance with the assistance of the EMTs.

The last patient took the longest to gain access to but he too was able to walk to an awaiting ambulance with assistance.

All four patients were transported to area hospitals with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
