Officials Update This Morning’s Fire On The Delaware Memorial

New Castle – At approximately 7:35 this morning officials with the Delaware River & Bay Authority (DRBA) where alerted to a vehicle that had caught fire while traveling over the Delaware bound bridge, according to DRBA Spokesman James Salmon.

A Ford Transit Connect van hauling medical supplies pulled into the closed far left lane just over center span as it caught fire. Deepwater Fire Company responded to the scene from the New Jersey side and extinguished the blaze.

Salmon said all lanes were closed for approximately 30 minutes before a single lane (far right) was reopened. After approximately two hours all lanes were reopened.

Authorities called for a flatbed tow truck, which removed the skeletal remains of the vehicle, according to Salmon.

The cause of fire is under investigation, preliminary indication are that it was some sort of mechanical issue.

No injuries were reported.
