Police: Man Beaten When He Tries To Stop Sexual Assault Of Friend, Suspect Charged With Rape

Delaware City The Delaware City Police Department has arrested a 45-year-old Delaware City and charged him with the sexual assault of a 23-year-old Delaware City woman, according to Chief David Baylor.

Baylor said at about 12:30 a.m., this morning, Delaware City Police responded to the unit block of Hamilton Place to a report of a rape in progress. Upon arrival, a Delaware City Police Officer, with the assistance of responding officer from the New Castle County Police Department were able to apprehend Anthony J. Carter, 45, of the unit block of Hamilton Place in connection with this incident, according to Baylor.

Officials said the investigation by the Delaware City Police Department, with the assistance of the New Castle County Police revealed that Carter was inside a residence in the unit block of Hamilton Street. While inside the residence, Carter kicked a bedroom door open, entered the room where he sexually assaulted a 23-year-old Delaware City woman, according to Baylor. A 20-year-old acquaintance of the victim attempted to intervene in the sexual assault and was assaulted by Mr. Carter, added Baylor.

The victim was transported to the Christiana Medical Center Emergency room by a Delaware City Fire Company ambulance where she was treated and later released. Baylor said the 20-year-old Delaware City man sustained a bruise to the eye, a laceration to the lip, and a broken hand. He refused medical treatment.

Anthony J. Carter was charged with one count of rape in the first degree, one count of unlawful sexual contact in the first degree, one count of unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, one count of assault in the second degree, all felonies, and offensive touching and criminal mischief. He was arraigned at Magistrate Court #11 via video phone and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $51,200.00 cash bond.
