SUV Barrel Rolls Into Oncoming Traffic, Driver In Critical

Seaford – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash that occurred on Sussex Highway (US13) south of Seaford this afternoon, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Fournier said the incident occurred around 12:08 p.m. Saturday October 28, 2017 as a 60-year-old Parsonsburg, Maryland man was operating a 2015 Ford Focus southbound on US13 in the left lane, south of Brickyard Road. A 29-year-old Laurel man was operating a 2004 Honda Pilot southbound on US13 in the right lane and was in the process of passing the Ford Focus. For unknown reasons, the Pilot suddenly swerved to the left which caused the left rear of the Pilot to strike the right front of the Focus, according Fournier.  After impact, the Ford Focus was redirected into the grass median where it came to a stop, upright, facing in a southerly direction. The Honda Pilot rotated counter-clockwise as it slid through the center grass median and began to barrel roll across the northbound lanes before coming to a stop upright in a ditch east of the northbound lanes.

The 60-year-old operator of the Focus was properly restrained and uninjured.

The 29-year-old operator of the Pilot was properly restrained and was initially transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital before being airlifted by Lifenet to Christiana Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Drugs and alcohol are not considered a factor on behalf of the operator of the Ford Focus. It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol are a factor on behalf of the 29-year-old operator of the Pilot, said Fournier.

US13 northbound between Airport Road and Brickyard Road was restricted to one lane for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
