Newark – At approximately 1:30 this afternoon Delaware State Police received information from New Castle County Police that several of their officers were taking cover after multiple shots were fired, according to radio reports.
Troopers were advised that County Police arriving at a home on Lawrence Ave in Newark had been fired upon and were taking cover behind their vehicles. Dispatch then told all Trooper’s responding the “Active Shooter” situation to switch to a different radio frequency.
Officers and agents from many different agencies responded to the scene. Negotiators were on scene and it’s believe they were communicating with the suspect(s) before they were taken into custody.
Several residence who live in the area, responding to our post, reported that they heard several shots, 4 – 6, six said one person.
At an afternoon press conference County Police said that they were called to the home to check on the welfare of a man who lived there. Officials said that comments made on a 911 call made them believed the man was planning to hurt himself. Police said when they arrived several shots rang out. It’s unclear if any of the shots were directed at the officers. Officials said the man was in the hospital with self inflicted knife wounds and that a woman that lives in the house was being questioned.
No police officers were injured in the incident.
