Wilmington – Later today, representatives from the Philadelphia 76ers, along with Mayor Mike Purzycki and other dignitaries, will announce that a new 140,000-square-foot, multi-purpose sports complex and youth training center will be built on the city’s Christina Riverfront, to be known as the 76ers Fieldhouse.
The sports complex is designed to be the premier center for youth sports in Delaware while providing thousands of under served youth with new sports programming and opportunities. In addition, the Philadelphia 76ers will announce that its NBA G League affiliate, the Delaware 87ers, will play its home games at the new facility.
The new facility will be built on an 8.9 acre parcel of land off U.S. Route 13 and Garasches Lane, near the planned route of the new Christina River Bridge. Last June the Mayor announced that construction on the new bridge will begin in the Spring of 2018. Mayor Purzycki Announces New Wilmington Bridge Near Riverfront
According to public records, the Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware currently owns several lots in this area. It’s believed that the lot at 401 Garasches Lane will be the location of the new complex.
An earlier guess that the complex would be on the water front appears to be incorrect. We won’t know for sure until this afternoon’s press conference.
In the image below we have marked the possible location in blue and laid it over DelDOTs planned route for the new bridge.
