Wilmington – The Christina Riverfront will again be the site of this year’s official New Year’s Eve Celebration in the City of Wilmington. The Riverfront Development Corporation brought the annual new year celebration back to life last year and this year, the City is joining as a co-sponsor. The RDC and City second annual Family Fun Night will feature a fireworks show as well as a variety of food, drink and music offerings.
The Executive Director of the RDC, Megan McGlinchey, and Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, said today that the evening of celebration and fun will begin at 6 p.m. at the Horizon Services Riverfront Rink at 308 Justison Street. Along with multiple skating sessions, including one during the fireworks show, the ice rink will host various vendors, offer giveaways, and other activities for children and families.
The evening will culminate with an early New Year’s Eve fireworks show at 9 p.m., which will take place from the same location along the river as the City’s annual July 4th show and last year’s inaugural New Year’s show on the Riverfront. So, while the fireworks show can be seen from various locations along the Riverfront, the ice rink will serve as a de facto viewing party, providing some of the best views of the action.
“The fireworks show last New Year’s Eve was so positively received by the community, we knew we had to bring it back this year. And to make it an even better experience, we have partnered with the City of Wilmington to add family-friendly activities and food vendors!” said RDC Executive Director McGlinchey.
“We are very pleased to support this annual celebration that allows us to reflect on the year that is ending as well as to express our hopes and good wishes for a better year ahead for everyone in 2018,” said Mayor Purzycki.
