Newark – On December 21, 2017 at 11:10 p.m. officers from the Special Operations Unit were conducting surveillance inside of K-Mart, 301 College Square, as part of the anti-shoplifting initiative, according to Lt. Fred Nelson.
Nelson said one of the officers observed a subject, later identified as Jonathan Audiffred, 25, of Newark, making movements that indicated to officers that Audiffred was possibly in possession of a handgun that was concealed on his hip.
Upon closer inspection of Audiffred, an officer observed what he believed to be the imprint of a portion of a handgun under Audiffred’s clothing. Officers stopped Audiffred outside of the business and recovered a Taurus PT111 Pro 9mm handgun concealed in Audiffred’s waistband, according to Nelson. Officers found that the handgun was loaded with a bullet in the chamber of the gun, added Nelson.
Officers confirmed that Audiffred does not have a permit to carry a handgun and he was arrested without incident and charged with Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon a Firearm. He was subsequently video arraigned in front of Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $5,000 unsecured bond.
