Albion – Just after 7:30 last night, Saturday January 13, 2018, firefighters from the Mill Creek Fire Company, along with several other fire companies responded to the 900 block of Tenth Avenue for reports of a home on fire.
While en route firefighters learned that the homes kitchen was on fire and that there was smoke in the home. Upon arrival Mill Creek Command confirmed and reported fire showing from the structure. The residents of the home were quickly accounted for and crews began working to knock the fire down.
New Castle County Paramedics responded to the scene and reported that one patient, a 58-year-old man, was treated emergency medical technicians (EMT’s) for smoke inhalation injuries but refused to be transported to the hospital.
During the blaze fire was reported under the structure with wires down in the yard. At one point conditions became unsafe and and crews were ordered out of the structure by command.
As firefighters poured water onto the fire, freezing temperatures quickly turned the water into sheets of ice, making it difficult for crews to maneuver. Command called for sand to be brought to the scene.
After working the fire for approximately 30 minutes the fire was brought under control at around 8:00 pm. Crews remained on scene into the night putting out hot spots and cleaning up.
Responding agencies included New Castle County Paramedics, Mill Creek Fire Company, Belvedere Fire Company, Wilmington Manor Fire Company, Cranston Heights Fire Company, Five Points Fire Company, Elsmere Fire Company, Minquas Fire Company, New Castle County Police Department and Delaware State Fire Marshal Office.
