Newark-Area Mailboxes Vandalized, Police Make Arrest

Newark – New Castle County Police have arrested 19-year-old Scott Smith of the unit block of Violette Drive for criminal mischief to mailboxes in the community of Timber Farms, according to police.

Officials said that on Saturday, January 6, at approximately 11: 40 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to the 500 block of W Hummock Lane for the report of a criminal mischief in progress.

Police learned that two subjects were observed damaging a mailbox and then fled in a black Mazda, according to authorities. Through the course of the investigation, police learned that an additional mailbox in the unit block of W Hummock Lane was also damaged. Police located the Mazda in the community of Springfield and initiated a traffic stop. Scott Smith was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. Evidence located on scene further implicated him in the crimes, according to police.

Scott Smith was charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief, attempted criminal mischief and underage possession of alcohol. He was arraigned and released on $500.00 unsecured bond and issued a no contact order.
