Newark – Newark Police Department is investigating a theft that occurred on Last night at 11:54 p.m. on the porch of The Deer Park Tavern, 108 W. Main Street, according to Lt. Fred Nelson.

Nelson said the victim, a 31-year-old male University of Delaware student, reported that he was on the porch when he was approached by a subject who asked him for money.

Due to a language barrier, the victim was unsure why the suspect was asking him for money. The victim removed his wallet from his pocket and the suspect grabbed it out of his hand and fled, said Nelson. The suspect was seen entering a red passenger car, which was parked in front of The Deer Park Tavern and left westbound on W. Main Street, according to Nelson.

The suspect was described as a black male, thin build, wearing a black jacket, jeans, and black and white shoes. The suspect fled in a red passenger vehicle with two additional occupants in it, one of whom was a white female with blonde hair.

This incident was the subject of a University of Delaware Alert that was sent out on 1/17/18 just after 1 a.m. The alert mistakenly stated that the suspect said he was armed with a handgun and that it was a robbery, said Nelson. This is the same alert we reported on earlier this morning.

Anyone with information regarding the theft should contact Officer Roberts at [email protected] or 302-366-7100 extension 3493.
